OCR: Former Chicago Alderman Convicted Of Racketeering Page 76 DC, 1-15/US Newswire: Fred Foreman, US Attorney for the Northern District of IL, along with William D. Branon, Special Agent-in-Charge, FBI, Chicago Division, announced a federal jury convicted former First Ward Alderman Fred Roti of Chicago, on all counts of the indictment. Specifically, Roti was found guilty of racketeering, racketeering conspiracy, five counts of bribery & four counts of extortion. The trial began on 12-14-92, before Judge Marvin Aspen. During the trial, the government proved that Roti extorted & accepted $7,500 from government informant Robert Cooley in May & June 1989, in exchange for Roti's support for a proposed zoning change at 400 N. Racine Ave. in Chicago. The government also proved that Roti took another $10,000 from Cooley in June & July, 1989, in exchange for promising to influence the performance of the judge assigned to the case of Eldridge vs. Carr, & another judge. (The Eldrige case was filed by the FBI as a part of its undercover investigation. ) As a result of Roti's conviction, he now faces a mazimum penalty of 20 years' imprisonment & a $250,000 fine on each of the racketeering charges, a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment & a fine of $250, 000 on each bribery charge, & a maximum penalty of 20 years' imprisonment & a fine of $250,000 on each extortion charge. In total, Roti faces a maximum penalty of 170 years' imprisonment & a fine of $2, 750,000.
